For over 30 years, the American Lifeguard Association (ALA) has been a leader in lifeguard training across the United States. Supported by the Global Lifeguard Association and the Swimming Pool and Spa Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it forms part of one of the largest worldwide aquatic consortiums. Together, they have certified over 250,000 lifeguards worldwide, helping to save countless lives.

The American Lifeguard Association plays a vital role in developing testing protocols and administering health and safety programs at swimming pools, waterparks, waterfronts, and beaches. The ALA’s certification program meets OSHA requirements and complies with national regulatory and accreditation standards. Its programs reflect ECC science and the findings of the United States Lifeguard Standards Coalition Report. Over the years, the American Lifeguard Association has been listed on the CDC Healthy Swimming website, and both the U.S. Department of Labor and the General Service Administration (GSA) have determined that the American Lifeguard Association offers certification programs equivalent to those provided by the American Red Cross.

Comprehensive Training and High Standards

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the U.S. Department of Labor, as the federal Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), has determined that the American Lifeguard Association meets the national standards for lifeguard training and certification. The American Lifeguard Association is among a select few national training entities recognized by the United States Government as meeting these federal requirements. Consequently, the American Lifeguard Association fulfills the national requirements for lifeguard training and certification in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.

Our lifeguard training and certification program requires that employers adhere to the standards outlined by the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC). In accordance with these national standards, employers must conduct both pre-service and in-service training evaluations. This rigorous approach ensures that our training not only meets national benchmarks but also provides candidates with top-tier education, preparing them for effective prevention and response to aquatic emergencies.

In addition to lifeguard training, the ALA is committed to environmental advocacy, raising public awareness of the importance of governmental and personal responsibility in protecting our aquatic environments. The association supports movements like Think Blue Too, which promote cleaner beaches and waterways for future generations.

A Voice for Aquatic Safety

Through public service announcements and national media appearances, ALA promotes the safe and enjoyable use of aquatic environments. The association has been featured on major network programs such as NBC’s Today Show, Good Morning America, The Doctors, and the Weather Channel, as well as national news networks like ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. Publications like Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, and Self Magazine, along with newspapers such as The Guardian, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post, have also quoted ALA’s advice on aquatic safety and environmental concerns.

The American Lifeguard Association adheres to a strict code of ethics, ensuring that it delivers high-quality health and safety training. Its program development draws on the expertise of recognized lifeguard professionals and external consultants from national health and safety organizations. ALA continually revises its content to meet current national standards and ensure the safety and efficacy of its programs.

The goal of the ALA training program is to provide candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to help prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. As with all certifications, employers should ensure that each candidate has the specific skills required for the position they are being considered for.
